In a couple of my last posts, I mentioned being pretty sick with what I thought was just some sort of stomach bug. Turns out it was something nastier. Fortunately, it first triggered a really bad psoriasis outbreak (for "I ended up in the ER" and "one of the dermatologists said it was the worst case he'd ever personally seen" values of "really bad"), which meant that I was already in Harborview hospital when my large intestine started falling apart. It was actually on the day I was going to be discharged, and if it had hit even an hour or so later, or I had gone to a lesser hospital, I absolutely would have died, but fortunately, I was still there, in the only level 1 trauma center in the region, and they were able to rush me into surgery before too much shit flooded my body cavity.</div><div><br></div><div>So, yeah. I now just have a semicolon instead of a full colon, and I've been dealing with an ileostomy, recovering from the surgeries (they had my whole abdomen wide open, and I've been doing a lot of PT exercises to get my abs to heal back together properly), and learning to manage my psoriasis since then, which has all kept me pretty tied up, and even tho I have been painting a bit, blogging about it has been far from my mind until I realized it was Dreadtober again.</div><div><br></div><div>The future outlook is the good part: Even tho they couldn't figure out what caused the collapse (despite an extensive list of things they were able to rule out), they're pretty sure it had been building up and causing lower level problems for years, which means that I may well have cleared up the root cause of much of my declining health over the past decade or so, and once I get my guts reconnected (The endoscopy department didn't have an opening until January to check out that everything is fully healed up inside, so the reconnection surgery needs to wait until then), I should be on the way to getting back into life in a way that seemed impossible a year ago.</div><div><br></div><div>P. S. I couldn't figure out how to work it in smoothly, but I want to talk a little more about psoriasis. I had always seen and heard of it as a joke condition, little more than annoying and unpleasant in appearance, but it can actually be an incredibly nasty condition. In bad cases, it's extremely painful, in a very similar way to first or even second degree burns. Another similarity with burns is that both mess with the body's ability to regulate its temperature. I've been feeling cold in a way that I never have before in my life, in addition to still overheating all the time, and being as sensitive to, say, hot water, as I was when I was a little kid. It's also absolutely exhausting: you don't realize how much energy you spend on growing skin until it's cranked up to 10 times the usual rate. Furthermore, shedding that skin so quickly leads to major fluid loss, as the skin cells die so quickly that their cellular fluid can't be reabsorbed before they go. Between the dehydration and the thermoregulation issues, severe cases can actually be lethal if left untreated, and even without the intestinal issues, I could well have died from that, too, if I hadn't been convinced to go to the ER soon enough. Finally, it's an autoimmune disorder, so the treatments for it are all immunosuppressant to some degree, which adds a whole other pile of extra worries about opportunistic infections. </div><div><br></div><div>I'm not sure how much I'm going to be on here in the medium term, but I do want to take this Dreadtober to finish up the 28mm scale Vulture OmniMech I started a few years back. After that, I might disappear again for a bit, but I'm hoping to be back on here regularly by next spring or so, once I'm solidly into the recovery from the (hopefully) final round of surgeries. </div><div><br></div><div>Anyhow. Hopefully I'll be back in a few days with my Dreadtober starter post, and until then, y'all have a good one now, y'hear! </div>WestRiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10221228665636182019noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6848887109592588663.post-83914066438864127932022-12-07T01:08:00.002-08:002022-12-07T01:14:49.968-08:00Gods in the Underhive (Slaanesh)Of the four greater Chaos Powers, Slaanesh is unique in not getting even a single suggestion for how to incorporate her worship into the fluff or modelling of a corrupted House gang. I would guess that if they had, it would probably involve Eschers modeled and/or painted to look like they're wearing even less than usual. Let's see if we can't come up with something more interesting than that.<div><br /></div><div>- Goliath: I see a few possibilities here. As with the Eschers, the amount of exposed skin on display could easily suggest something sexual. But I feel like it would be more interesting to explore something like a gang focused on self-perfection to an unreasonable degree, a la the Emperor's Children or the Flawless Host. The amount of stimms they have to use also leaves an opening for falling into the use of less functional drugs as well.</div><div><br /></div><div>- Van Saar are possibly the most compelling to me here. Imagine a gang suffering nerve damage, all their senses failing them, becoming more and more desperate to be able to feel anything, anything at all, at any cost. Easy pickings for the Dark Prince!</div><div><br /></div><div>- A Cawdor Word-Keeper could easily fall to the temptation of the inhuman charisma the followers of Slaanesh are noted for. With such oratory and personal magnetism, just imagine how well he could spread the good word of the Redemption. And surely one so righteous would be able to resist the corruption that comes with that power...</div><div><br /></div><div>- Orlocks, being kinda generic in many ways, don't present a whole lot of specific handles here. The similarly generic sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll combo does feel like it fits pretty well, tho, and could make for a fun project.</div><div><br /></div><div>- For the Delaque, I think once again their connection with the Silent Ones might be a cool angle. Perhaps one of them becomes fascinated with the different range of sensory inputs that humans have, and pushes those it's connected with to explore them to the utmost. </div><div><br /></div><div>- Escher: Again, I think chems are a fun way to go here. This is one of the few that suggests a specific gang build to me, not only focusing on the use of stimms themselves, but also taking chem darts all over the place and getting their enemies all fucked up on Obscura and Kalma. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQneYBv8o7xk7xUrThrx0Xy5qgoC3H0gFx_O7ar_lXmtPqh_S9VseZ7Q1VphODY50Vx2jFay55Z4oOsJr8-k8oTkzZFli-dGhS14HRhPnkdHsKJMFMofwLw9gphAThZSwLdVYCtN1dbyzw-5MpbMDOMGzB5A0sXRiz5Z8NFi-yG7pDIIVDwc7MoLf67g/s1000/WhoareCorpsegrinders-Nov05-Butcher-04h3j.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="811" data-original-width="1000" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQneYBv8o7xk7xUrThrx0Xy5qgoC3H0gFx_O7ar_lXmtPqh_S9VseZ7Q1VphODY50Vx2jFay55Z4oOsJr8-k8oTkzZFli-dGhS14HRhPnkdHsKJMFMofwLw9gphAThZSwLdVYCtN1dbyzw-5MpbMDOMGzB5A0sXRiz5Z8NFi-yG7pDIIVDwc7MoLf67g/s320/WhoareCorpsegrinders-Nov05-Butcher-04h3j.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>- Corpse-Grinder Cults could easily be Slaaneshi as well. In this case, it would perhaps be less about "meat make strong", and more about the sensual allure of eating something with actual flavour. As with Nurgle, there's also some scope here for cool modeling projects with themed masks.</div><div><br /></div><div>As a side note, I'm only planning one more of these. This is an area where Khorne really suffers from the problem of all war gods in wargames, where turning to him generally involves just doing exactly the same thing that literally everyone else in the game is doing anyway (i.e. violence), just more so, and he becomes basically the generic default option. The standard CGC are already more interesting than anything else I can think of for a House gang.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, until next time, y'all have a good one, y'hear! </div>WestRiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10221228665636182019noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6848887109592588663.post-36794749325568343742022-11-30T03:14:00.001-08:002022-11-30T03:14:33.894-08:00Gods in the Underhive (Nurgle)I'm supposed to stay awake for a few more hours after falling and concussing myself due to fever-induced vertigo, so it feels like a good time to write about Nurgle.<div><br></div><div>The Book of Ruin offers a few suggestions about narratives for Chaos-corrupted House gangs, but it feels to me like they went for the low-hanging fruit. In the case of Nurgle, their suggestion was regarding Cawdor, since they basically spend their lives picking thru filth heaps anyway. But consider:</div><div><br></div><div>- A Goliath gang who have shifted their definition of strength from what they can overcome to what they can endure. Every time they take pride in shrugging off some damage or pain, Nurgle's hold on their souls tightens just a little further. There's probably also some potential to draw from the line in Hammer to Fall, "Build your muscles as your body decays", but that just popped into my head, so I haven't thought further along that line yet. </div><div><br></div><div>- A Van Saar gang, their immune systems shredded by the radiation from their faulty tech, discover that, somehow, the diseases they are left wide open to no longer affect them, even tho they have clearly not been cured by any means.</div><div><br></div><div>- Orlocks are kinda Cawdor-lite in this specific regard. Not a whole lot I can think of that's really cool here, just that they probably cracked open something while mining that they really should have left alone.</div><div><br></div><div>- House Delaque was created by a plague of dream sickness, which puts them pretty squarely in Nurgle's wheelhouse from the word go. But even beyond that, there are some interesting possibilities. The things they do for the Silent Ones frequently take them to the deep, dark places of Necromunda, where all manner of foulness lurks. Further, the Silent Ones might well be careless about something that was harmless to the original Delaque species, but is highly infectious for humans.</div><div><br></div><div>- House Escher bring to mind a subtler taint, reminiscent of the Dan Abnett short story Pestilence. Spreading Nurgle's plagues thru tainted chem deliveries, perhaps even focusing on medical supplies for extra irony.</div><div><br></div><div>- Corpse-Grinder Cults: What, you think Khorne is the only one who benefits from a Hive being filled with piles of rotting flesh? The focus here becomes less cannibalism, and more just about gratuitously leaving rotting meat all over the place for decay to take its course. Altho not leaving the cannibalism angle out entirely; perhaps only consuming the dead once they have sufficiently "ripened". The angle for Escher works here, too, spreading the diseases thru the food supply rather than chems. Also some cool potential modelling opportunities using Blightking parts, and perhaps an insectoid aspect to the masks rather than the standard hornéd beast look. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Well, hopefully none of y'all catch anything like this shit I've got, and until next time, y'all have a good one, y'hear! </div>WestRiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10221228665636182019noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6848887109592588663.post-33003196508240463992022-11-28T08:56:00.001-08:002022-11-28T08:56:07.565-08:00Modern Art in the 41st Millennium This piece, which has been variously reported as being titled "My Triumph", "Don't Worry, I've Got it Entirely Under Control", and "Agh! But I recently reconnected with an old gaming buddy thru Twitter, and he's going to be able to roll up here some time in the new year and I have enough space, energy, and terrain for us to get a few Necromunda games in, so I've started working on a gang to use in a 2 person mini campaign.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div>I have a bunch of old metal Escher models sitting around that I've used as Chaos Cultists for years, so I'm rebasing them, repainting them in a more coherent scheme, and doing a few conversions to bring them more up to date with what are non-terrible options in House of Blades. In the case of my Leader here, she doesn't actually have an option for the maul this model was originally armed with, and mauls are pretty terrible in Newcromunda anyway. The Shock Whip is much cooler. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Still think she's absolutely gorgeous, and wish I could manage a better paint job to do the model justice, but essential tremor and exhaustion put some hard limits on my capacity for detail work. The maul is technically illegal here, but unlike the first model, it's much harder to remove, and contributes more to the badass vibe, so I'm just going to ignore it rules-wise and have her just armed with the pistol.)</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was idly browsing thru bitz stores on eBay a while back when I realized that Voidmaster Nitsch had a cool uniform that could work as the basis for Marta Dyas from Gideon the Ninth. I really want to do a model of Gideon herself at some point, but I don't have a good base model in mind.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>This first one was done also for the 35 Years of 40K thing. It's my take on a Grabber-Slasher, a little-known Tyranid beastie that basically only appeared in Advanced Space Crusade. There was a model for it, that was later reclassified as a Squig and moved to the Ork range, but it was frankly kinda crap, so I started over from the statline and description of how they operated in ASC, which gave me the impression of a Gaunt-type Lictor counterpart. A few GSC bits and a spare Hormagaunt body later, and I had this guy here ready to leap out of the shadows to grab and slash away!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>While deciding how to paint my True Mechanicum Robots, I ran into a bit of a problem. The obvious approach is to just do a darker version of the standard Adeptus Mechanicus look of red and brass. The problem is that, while red and brass and Imperial says AdMech, red and brass and rebelling against the Imperium says Khorne, and I didn't really want them to be super Chaos tainted, focusing more on Silica Animus, Xenos tech, and forbidden stuff like Phosphex. I figure they've ended up with some Chaos effects, because it's really hard to avoid that in 40K, but I don't want it to be the main thing here. Hopefully the red and steel with a few brass details manages to thread the needle there. </div><div><br></div><div>The other problem with True Mechanicum is getting them to look creepier than the regular AdMech stuff, which is a job of work, since those guys are already creepy as hell. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>I kept the cogs on, but did them in a single colour instead of the usual split, which I believe is intended to symbolize the duality of the Omnissiah and the Emperor, and of the Adeptus Mechanicus themselves and the Imperium as a whole. The True Mechanicum reject the Emperor and the Imperium entirely, and do their cog icons in a single colour to symbolize the singular nature of the Omnissiah. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>With all the Gauss Blasters on top, it reminds me of a late-90s Warlord Titan, but chonkier. It felt kinda weird painting the Gauss, because the few actual Necrons I've painted have been Thokt Dynasty, but the story I have for these is way over on the other side of the Galaxy, so I went with the more standard green. </div><div><br></div><div>The Gravitic Singularity Lance on the left arm is the main weapon for its primary role, and it's actually a close combat weapon, not a gun. It's very unwieldy, but since the Colossus is a Siege robot, intended to hit large stationary things, the sheer destructive power is far more important. It creates a miniature black hole at the tip of the lance, and then thrusts it into the target, with generally catastrophic results, especially against things that have already been destabilized and weakened by the Gauss beams. </div><div><br></div><div>Hopefully I'll be back soon with this thing finished, some work on the SC Dread, and/or some 40K civilians. </div>I also want to toss in a shout-out to <a href="https://www.mindtaker.org/">Mindtaker Miniatures</a>, since they're responsible for this in two different regards. First, years ago, I got the models that I used to make this from them. Then, much more recently, it was well digging out stuff to sell to them that I found those base models hidden in my storage shelves. And finally, they're just generally good folks, and I miss being able to hang out like when I used to roll down to Vancouver every summer. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>Oh, and before I forget, I did manage to find the parts to finish off these other two, and I got them primed this afternoon. The Hades Gatling Autocannon isn't shown here because it's already painted and magnetized, so I didn't include it when I grabbed them to take pics before priming, but they'll be good to paint in another day or two, once the spray paint finishes off-gassing. The Space Crusade inspired one does a pretty good job all by itself of encapsulating #35YearsOf40K, containing parts from 9 different kits spanning four decades and three completely different game systems. </div><div><br></div><div>I've got some other stuff I've been doing that I'd like to give a more extensive writeup than I was able to on Twitter, so I'll probably have some of that next time, and then more Dreadtobering after that. I've been digging into a lot of the older fluff lately, and for a long time, the only real distinction in 40K between Dreads and Robots was whether they had a pilot or a computer. They had tons of cross-compatible parts, and were frequently salvaged from to repair the other. I had figured this one was just going to live in my head for the foreseeable future, since I can't afford an Ironclad kit right now, but then I found one while digging out stuff to sell, so here we go!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div>This particular example is a True Mechanicum* variant. Unencumbered by the narrow minded restrictions of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the creator felt free to include Xenos tech, in the form of the Gauss Blaster array, and probably some aspects of the Gravitic Singularity Lance on the left arm. There's going to be some sort of fuckoff huge flamer on the right arm, in place of the single Bolter that the classic version carried for anti-infantry work, but I'm not sure where I put the bits I wanted to use for it.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div>Then there's this mess, inspired by the Mk IX Dominator class from Space Crusade's Mission: Dreadnought, but limited by the bits I happen to have on hand. Again, I'm frustrated by not being able to find what I want for the right arm. I've made like 5 Maulerfiends, how the hell do I not have any Hades Gatling Autocannon anywhere I can find them? Secondary armament is going to be a Missile Launcher and Conversion Beamer, but I'm not sure yet how I want to mount them. Then I need to figure out something more interesting for the front of the thing. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div>Finally (for now), we've got the literal physical incarnation of a Twitter shitpost. I can't remember who, but someone was talking about how much it would suck for a White Scars hero to get stuck in a slow, plodding Dreadnought, and I spewed out some bullshit about a Techmarine bolting the top half of a Dread onto a Land Speeder. Then, again while digging out stuff to sell, I also found a couple of AoBR Dreads and this beat to shit secondhand Speeder, so I decided to actually build the curséd thing. </div><div><br></div><div>This one, I at least don't have to hunt for parts for. Just needs some gaps filled in and a fresh coat of primer and I can start painting it. I decided to go with a weapons fit that will let it actually be used as Land Speeder Tornado, because that felt like it made the whole thing even more ridiculous.</div><div><br></div><div>I'll be back once I've made some progress. Absolutely great guy, and he became something of a role model for me as a gamer who really embraced the whole hobby, and didn't get hung up on not being the most skillful player or anything like that. He'd just keep showing up with his fantastic looking Imperial Fists and have fun hanging out with everyone while getting his butt kicked. As a regular at the bottom tables with a bit of a knack for painting myself, it was reassuring. <div><br></div><div>On a few occasions, when he was downsizing his collection, he'd just give stuff away to people who he thought would appreciate it and put it to good use. At one point, he gave me a bunch of long OOP Mordians, because he knew I used them as Command Squads and officers in my metal IG army, and that I didn't have many opportunities to expand that force.</div><div><br></div><div>The last time I saw him (tho I didn't know that at the time), he gave me this LE101 Chaos Renegade Marine, telling me* that it was the first Chaos Marine GW ever released, because he knew that I had gotten started in 40K with Chaos Marines, and they've always been my core faction.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

At least here, it is. For some of you, it's probably almost Boxing Day already, and for a few, it might not have started quite yet.<br />
<br />
I got myself Da Red Gobbo, because he was just too awesome a Model to pass up. Because I bundled him in the same shipment with some Made to Order stuff, tho, he didn't show up here until Saturday. I got him built that evening, primed on Sunday, and painted between yesterday and today. Used it as a break when the noise and anarchy of having that much family around got overwhelming. So, yeah, I put in quite a bit of time ;)<br />
<br />
Anyhow, here he is, in all his glory:<br />

As usual, I'm noticing a bunch of stuff here that I forgot or messed up, but overall I'm really happy with the final result. Freehand candy cane stripes on the pistol and badge, and writing on the list, just weren't happening, tho. I particularly love the results I got one the star, the decision to do the grenades in Christmas colours, and the coloured metallics on the globe ornaments.<br />
<br />
Also, given that it inspired me to take it from NIB to done in less than four days, I'm going to say I'm excited enough about it for it to qualify for Azazel's <a href="https://azazelx.com/2019/11/25/destino-december-19-community-painting-challenge/?c=17848#comment-17848">Destino December</a> Hobby Challenge. <br />
<br />
I also picked up the <a href="http://www.harwoodhobbies.com/store/c4/Ana_Polanscak_Store.html">full set of Models</a> from <a href="https://gardensofhecate.blogspot.com/">Ana Polanscak</a>'s (seriously, if you're not already following her blog, and like creepy atmospheric stuff, go check her out. Amazing modeling and painting, and some of the best narrative battle reports anywhere) Kickstarter earlier this year, and the Skull Familiar's hat just screamed "Christmas" to me, while the rest of the Model just sort of invoked generalized screaming. Nightmare Before Christmas sort of thing. So I got it done up as well, simple job, but it came out well. Kinda wish I'd done more with the legs, but I just sort of ran out of steam. Still happy with it.<br />

So yeah, I hope all y'all have been and continue having pleasant holidays, regardless of which one(s) you celebrate. I also got my set of the Untamed Beasts from WarCry done and photographed, which was a really fun experiment, but I'm gonna save them for their own post. Again, mostly just a pic dump, as there isn't a whole lot to say about these. Sprayed black, then just heavily overbrushed, using a half-inch brush for the grey first, then a quarter-inch for most of the rest. The seasoned and cut timber is XV-88, while the fresher logs are Rhinox Hide (I think. Might have been Dryad Bark) for the bark, and Ushabti bone for the still-green inner wood. Some Typhus Corrosion and Skrag Brown for rust on the steel parts, the always wonderful Nihilakh Oxide on the bronze gratings, and then a bit of drybrushing to bring both of those back up. <br />

Starting off with the bell tower, the coolest piece in the set. Again, these were shot before I switched back to my dark background again, and the high contrast made it hard to get great pics, but if you open the bigger versions, they should be a bit better. The stairs fit really nicely, staying in place well, but still easily removable to use elsewhere.<br />

In retrospect, I probably should have done a "breakdown" pic of this one, too. It's actually four separate parts, each usable on their own in combination with various other parts of the set: The fallen statue, the stairs, the platform, and the "gate" on the end of the platform. Again, stays together very nicely during game play despite how easy it is to take apart and move around.<br />

The various smaller pieces of the set. I don't have enough room in my lightbox to show the bridges actually in use. The log barricades really didn't photograph well here; the bronze sections are much clearer in person. If you look at the end parts of the little ruin, you'll see there are two different broken grating pieces. If you put them together facing each other, they're both distorted in the same direction, so you can set up a spot where something just busted right through and the broken parts all look right for it, like it really was one section originally. <br />

The second larger section of ruins. I really like how that joining piece between the two halves works. It's just the right degree of broken down for the gap there. There's a third pic of this, but it's not uploading for some reason.<br />

The final, and largest, section of ruins. I don't really have a good shot of the whole bunch of it together, but here's one from a game a while back. This was actually before I'd got it to the point it is in the rest of the pics, but it still looked pretty good at tabletop distance:<br />

I'd like to do a little more with it, maybe do a super light drybrush with an off-white over everything, and there's a ton of sloppy spots that could use some touch-up, but it's more than good enough for casual use. As usual, I have a few more things currently going on, and hopefully I'll get some of them done and ready to post soon, but who knows how long it will actually be. Basically just a pic dump. I've been really unproductive for the past month or so, in large part due to a pretty nasty bursitis flare-up in my hip that makes shifting from a sitting to standing position really painful, and has been interfering with pretty much every aspect of my life. Anyhow, here's some Ghouls, and also some larger ones. I can never remember what the hell the bigger ones are called, I just sort of think of them as bigger Ghouls. I actually built them more like the Vampire Counts version because the heads look cooler, and those ones aren't used in WarCry, so there's no possibility of confusion. I kind of wish there were smaller winged Ghouls as well, I think that would be a cool niche.<br />
<br />
Like most of the Warbands adapted from pre-existing forces, they're stupidly overpowered compared to the Warbands created purely for the game. Theoretically, it's balanced out by the points costs, but the ability to concentrate so much hitting power and durability into the space of one Model (and as a result into one Activation) is a really big deal, and the Fly runemark seems to be badly under-priced by the devs.<br />

They were painted purely with Army Painter glazes over a light tan spray (one of the Krylon Camo line), except for the wings, which I used to experiment with Volupus Pink, from the Contrast paints. Unfortunately, it doesn't end up looking like I wanted for my Thorns of the Briar Queen, so I need to go back to the drawing board there to figure out how I want to do them.<br />
<br />
I also have some Terrain pics to post up, and I'm halfway done with my Untamed Beasts (using a similar approach as with the Ghouls) and my Splintered Fang (need to find more cool venomous snake patterns that are within my ability to paint. Hopefully something out of that will be up before too much longer, but however long it may be, y'all have a good one, y'hear!WestRiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10221228665636182019noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6848887109592588663.post-45159907133759906992019-10-17T05:30:00.000-07:002019-10-17T05:30:19.254-07:00Squaddie September: 40K BeastmenFirst off, a quick note that I fixed the photos in the <a href="https://cascadiangrimdark.blogspot.com/2019/10/squaddie-september-megavolt-cultists.html">previous Squaddie September post</a>, got some new pics against a black backdrop. Still not perfect, those Models are just as much of a pain to find a good angle for photography as they are for finding a good angle to get a paintbrush in there, but at least the colour scheme is visible now.<br />
<br />
Anyhow, as the title indicates, this time we've got the Blackstone Fortress Beastmen ready to go. These guys were much more fun to paint than the Megavolt Cultists, and I decided to mostly stick to a pretty limited palette and see how many browns I could use in there:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2AbclsfcTonawtvxTCpf18OMWIkojpDmcEo9KBvvQquGDDH64HcChAY_HA_u1Go-eL-Ple4k1dVzcWmvF-gyM5lkd6t8Ix9u_XSMMq0vMAzp-vfJ164tvR8c1Gp0q7xFIqa5vWUma7b6l/s1600/DSCN2910.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="762" data-original-width="1600" height="152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2AbclsfcTonawtvxTCpf18OMWIkojpDmcEo9KBvvQquGDDH64HcChAY_HA_u1Go-eL-Ple4k1dVzcWmvF-gyM5lkd6t8Ix9u_XSMMq0vMAzp-vfJ164tvR8c1Gp0q7xFIqa5vWUma7b6l/s320/DSCN2910.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The rusted metal on the machetes was my fave bit, I always like doing rusty metal. Then they got some cleaner metal on the Chainswords and pistols, and a bit of red and yellow flair to tie them in with the Renegade Guard Squads. Looking it it now, I notice I also forgot to do the brass rings that a couple of them have in their noses, but whatever. I may get to it at some point.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Even some pretty cool detail back here. I like the hair they've got, lots of cool details like braids and little charms woven in.<br />
<br />
Pretty simple lot, it's back to the grindstone for now, but I've got a couple more posts from the September challenge to write up, so they should be along reasonably soon. Until then, y'all have a good one, y'hear!<br />

So I decided to switch fictional universes and go with the <a href="https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Mad_Dog_(Vulture)">Vulture/Mad Dog</a> kit that I got from <a href="http://battlemechclub.blogspot.com/">FCY Battletech Models</a> last spring.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The top part is kind of back-heavy, and I didn't go with the best pose to compensate for that. I'm going to need to pin it to the base really solidly, but for now, my finger works. Plague Marine for scale.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I was a little disappointed that this Model is based more on the MWO version (mainly I like the arms on the classic one better), but he'd already done the classic version some years ago, and doesn't do repeats. I may come back to it later and try to scratch-build some new arms for it that better fit what I want it to be, but that's way too much work for right now.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A better look at the base without my hand in the way. It's going to be a street with a collapsed wall partially across it.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I just got the base in the mail on Friday, so that hasn't been primed yet. Need to stick some bits of paperclips and such in there for "rebar", and spend some time with some spackle to cover up the texture on the flat surfaces of the cork. Hopefully I'll get that done and get the base primed sometime this week, and get some paint on the Mech itself during the same span. I'm planning on a <a href="http://camospecs.com/Miniature/Details/1661/mad-dog-vulture">Ghost Bear Clan Invasion-era Alpha Galaxy</a> camo pattern. Frustratingly, I can't find any information on how Unit insignia etc. is displayed on Mechs. I never bothered when I was painting the regular scale ones, but working at this scale, it seems like I really should. Between the various computer games, the fluff books, the official art, and the larger-scale Models, it seems like there should be information about it codified somewhere, but I can't even find anything referring to it at all.<br />
<br />
More to come later. The first of a few posts for Azazel's <a href="https://azazelx.com/2019/08/23/scenic-squaddie-september-19-community-painting-challenge/">Squaddie/Scenic September Hobby Challenge</a>. It's taken me way too long to get this stuff photographed and ready to post, but now it begins.<br />

<br />
First off, no, that isn't a typo in the title. When I was a kid back in the early 90s, one of my favourite cartoons was Darkwing Duck, and as soon as I saw the name "Negavolt Cultists", I knew I was going to have to do them up as a tribute to his longest-lasting and most persistent nemesis, Megavolt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzytE4RPxV3PL3bjH7X60vK7bsNr4MeyffJnC89aO3RKikRqNRILJj3v3PmrToJp50fH0V65bZtSOYHUbsz8nrWVBoYt7lkfHpCf1bCCBqA7CVRjSdAUd4Z_A2CBLx_bvVEzjDEhkMIiLB/s1600/Megavolt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="400" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzytE4RPxV3PL3bjH7X60vK7bsNr4MeyffJnC89aO3RKikRqNRILJj3v3PmrToJp50fH0V65bZtSOYHUbsz8nrWVBoYt7lkfHpCf1bCCBqA7CVRjSdAUd4Z_A2CBLx_bvVEzjDEhkMIiLB/s320/Megavolt.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I tried as best I could to go with a similar colour scheme, with a drab yellow for most of the clothes, greenish-blue for the gloves and leg wrappings (Megavolt's boots), red for most of the backpack unit and wire insulation, and brass for the electrical contacts and exposed bits of wiring.<br />

<br />
Also, on a totally different note, this was supposed to be part of my last post, on my Death Guard army. I made up some "souvenir" copies of my Army List for the event, but it turned out that almost no one wanted them. One guy wouldn't even pick it up. All that, despite the fact that it was just done with coffee grounds and used tea bags and they actually smelled quite nice.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It amused me to wait a moment after handing these across and then say "And here's a copy you can actually read" and give them a non-aged sheet in a much more reasonable font.</td></tr>

That's it for now. I'm going to take a look through the other shots I took and see how many of them really want the black background as well. Hopefully at least some of them will be decent as they are, and I can get them up relatively quickly. I'm submitting this one for <a href="https://azazelx.com/2019/07/25/awesome-august-19-community-painting-challenge/">Azazel's Awesome August Hobby Challenge</a>. Not because every single one of the Models seems awesome to me or anything like that (tho quite a few of them would probably qualify on their own), but because I painted almost all of it in a week. I had finished the Angel of Disease for Jewel of July, and one of the Predators, plus the underlayers for the rust on the other Vehicles, were done then too, and one Squad of Plague Marines just needed touch up and re-basing, since I did them in like 2002. All the remaining work on the Vehicles was done in that week, tho, and the other 22 Infantry Models were primer at the start of it. Anyhow, on with the show!<br />

The names mostly come from Morbid Angel songs, except for the Unyielding Kings of Agony (Slayer), and the Serpents of the Light (Deicide). As mentioned, due to rushing, there's a lot more I want to get to, particularly some obnoxiously bright highlights on the green, and without those, I had to tweak the colour balance really carefully to get them even this visible. Need to clear my desk off properly again so I can get in to the light box and change out the backdrop for a darker one, but that's not happening anytime soon.<br />
<br />
This really shows how feast and famine my productivity can be. I got whatever it was done between January and March, then nothing from then 'til mid July, and then another 36 completions in less than a month. Unfortunately, the two purchases I made since then added another 46 unpainted Models plus Terrain, so I'm even further in the red despite that. Hopefully some of those will make it as part of next month's <a href="https://azazelx.com/2019/08/23/scenic-squaddie-september-19-community-painting-challenge/">Scenic & Squaddie September Hobby Challenge</a>. I have a bunch of other stuff well along, too, and have been keeping my momentum up fairly well, so hopefully there will be more soon, probably a mix of stuff for various smaller-scale GW Games, since I'm way more into those than full-on 40K these days. One of my gaming buddies came over on Saturday, and we finally got around to actually playing Warcry. The weekend before, I'd seen some people playing, and one of them said that he thought it might be just barely possible to build all the scenery in a single day. Obviously, that's the kind of thing I take as a challenge, but after finishing, either he builds extremely slowly, or he also meant all the dudes from the set as well, or something else, I don't know. Even taking more care with cleanup and such than I usually do, and consulting the <a href="https://waywalkerstudios.com/assembling-terrain-for-warcry/">guide</a> that Waywalker Studios did on making sure your Terrain can actually be used for all the Battlefield cards, it still didn't take anywhere near a full day.<br />
<br />
Speaking of that guide, as you may or may not have noticed, the assembly instructions in the box only show how to build two Ruins, and leave the remainder up to you. Which would be all well and good except that the game is built around specific Terrain set-ups on the included cards, and if you do just randomly build something cool with the rest, you won't necessarily actually be able to set all of those up. Furthermore, there are a couple of places where it's important to <i>not</i> follow the directions, as they tell you to glue on the stairs and a couple of other parts that the cards call for using in different configurations. The Waywalker Studios guide is good, but they relied on the pictures from the set, which don't have very good angles for the ruins that don't have directions. So hopefully, as well as being a build showcase, this will also have some useful reference images of those ruins from different angles.<br />

These are some different angles on the ruin that doesn't have a good pic in the instructions. Hopefully, along with the parts list in the Waywalker guide, they'll make it easier for someone else to build than it was for me.<br /><br />

The last of the ruins. Together, they really do offer a pretty impressive range of options. OK, technically, I think the next one is a ruin as well, but I think of it as The Bell Tower instead. It doesn't really have the same range of options and potential for mixing with the other parts, but is still really cool.<br />

Again, as noted before, don't glue the stairs in. They pressure-fit just fine. I chose to leave the skeletons off of this one because A) the overall concentration of them was getting a bit high for my taste after doing the barricades, B) they'll be cool for other projects, and C) they all have the same pose, and collectively, it makes them look like they were sentenced to The Hell of Infinite Coffee and No Toilets. One big thing to note is that none of the stone framework is damaged except the very top. Chop off those shattered column tops and this could work great as part of an intact structure, make an actual bell tower or something. Also, you could put all kinds of things in the niches instead of the skeletons. A bit skinny for most actual minis, but there re definitely things that could make cool statuary or whatever in there.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The last major piece of terrain from the set. Again, don't glue the stairs in, and ideally don't glue the platform to the statue head (it actually stays on surprisingly solidly), or the barricade at the end either. I did that before I looked up advice on building these, and really wish I hadn't.<br />

See. If that bit hadn't been there, this would be great for extending the platform area available. But it's stuck, so that's always going to be blocked off. Don't make my mistake. Leave it unglued. It sits on there just fine. I thought I also had a pic showing how well the stairs fit with the other ruins, but apparently not. You can see it in the big pic at the top, but it's not as nice as it would have been if I'd done it in the light box. <br /><br />
I really want more of this Terrain. It's built to be pretty compatible with the other AoS Terrain from the Azyrite Ruins on, and there's so much more potential than what I felt constrained to by the limitations of the Game. A lot of this stuff (particularly the bell tower and statue head) could even fit in with 40K Sector Imperialis sets pretty nicely with a bit of work.<br />
<br />
I've also got a bunch of shots of the Death Guard stuff that I've done this month, just need to get those ready to post. Until then, y'all have a good one, y'hear!<br />
<br />
