Gellerpox Infected: Nightmare Hulks

Once again with the Nurgle warning. These guys include some of the grossest stuff I've ever done, so maybe don't click through to the rest of the post if you're currently eating or something. This will be the last of these for a while, tho.
OK, for those of you still with us, let's get started:

The Nightmare Hulks are the big guys of the Gellerpox Infected. Some are "merely" warped in form and grown in size, while others seem to be several different beings merged together.

First up, we have the Commander, Vulgrar Thrice-Cursed. I feel like GW has used that epithet before, possibly it's thrice-used now? Anyhow, Vulgrar was originally the engine-master of the New Dawn, but he got infected by the Gellerpox and absorbed his two chief assistants and also apparently a bunch of random machinery. Or maybe was cybernetically enhanced before and those just got warped as well. I didn't really like the flaming grill in his gut, so I replaced it with the top from a barrel from somewhere. I figure he can still pop the little spigot there and spew out something horrific and probably flammable like his rules say he can.

I had a lot of fun working on the bionic parts, going to town with various browns and technical paints to get ridiculously over the top rust effects. The rest was fairly simple, just Bugman's Glow and Jokaero Orange, AP Strong Tone, and some Nurgle's Rot here and there.

Big Spike was also pretty fun to work on, just trying to get him super gross. I didn't manage to really get the effect, but I used some pics of botfly infestations as reference when I was working on that mess on his back. I liked the imbalance in his sculpt, but the fly head growing out of his shoulder didn't quite work for me, so I chopped it off and replaced it with an arm from a plastic zombie. Kept the head around to use on a Plaguebearer champion or something at some point, tho, because it is a cool bit, just not there.

I went with a more pallid flesh tone for him, Rakarth Flesh washed with AP Purple Tone, and then added some more purple and green washes in various places. His beard didn't come out as well as I'd hoped, but it's done all grizzled, with lots of grey and white hairs in with the original black.

The Writher is apparently just mutated, but it looks more like it had an octopus and a couple of extra squid arms merged with it. I have no idea where that kind of sea creature would come from on a space ship, tho, so I trimmed away most of the other fishing-related details, and painted the barnacles as some sort of inflamed sores. I also felt like the dude peering out from its belly was a bit too much, and pushed it over the line from horrific to ludicrous, so I trimmed that down and covered it up with some greenstuff.

The majority of the paint on the more or less humanoid parts was done similarly to Big Spike, but with AP Green Tone instead of Purple. At some point, I'd like to go back and do a few more glazes on the tentacles to smooth the blending out, and also bring the "inside" parts of them up a bit lighter, but, as with many projects, I hit a point where I just had to call it done for now.

I did a crap job of taking off some of the detail back here. I think I got distracted and forgot to come back and finish it, but didn't notice until I was painting.

Last, but not least, we have Gnasher-Screamer. He was also formed by absorbing several other crew members, but I felt like the extra heads on his arm were just too goofy, so I trimmed them away. I left the ones on his belly, tho. More direct passage from mouth(s) to guts that way.

Like Vulgrar, his skin is done in Bugman's Glow, but I went with AP Red Tone for the wash, since he has sort of a cannibal abattoir vibe to him, and the red reinforced that. I really went to town on the cleaver, figuring it hasn't been cleaned at all since his transformation, while it has been seeing heavy use. I tried to get the blood dripping off to go a little further, but BftBG has too much surface tension or something, and I couldn't get it to run any further down the thread I'd glued on, so I just trimmed it there.

If you made it all the way through that, I commend you on your strong stomach! Things will be less gross for quite a while now here. I've got one more section of the GSC Dex to look at, the Vehicles, and then I want to do a sort of wrap up post looking at some potential Army Lists. Those might get pushed back a bit, tho, since there are a bunch of hobby challenges going on this month, and I haven't yet posted any of the stuff I've done for any of them other than Squaduary, so those ones might take precedence. Regardless, until next time, y'all  have a good one, y'hear!

    1. Thanks! I'm really pleased with them. For once, when I look at the pics, there's more "I did good on that" than "Dammit there's another spot I screwed up" ;)

  2. Thats some nifty converting going on there and you have removed the most outrageous excesses. This is another box that I have to resist the urge to buy. You are not helping.

    1. Thanks! Not sure "beautifully" is an adverb I would have used there, tho ;)

  4. Nicely (if still disturbingly) done!

These ought to make for excellent (and infinitely cheaper than the out0of-production FW variety) Chaos Ogryn.

    1. Thanks! And yeah, perfect Chaos Ogryn base Models. A quick look on eBay shows them going for between $8-15 each, which even on the high end is cheaper than GW plastic Ogryns, let alone OOP FW.
