Dreadtober: Mid-Month(ish) Update

I've been chugging along reasonably well on these two. The Armiger just wants a few more details picked out and then the base finished. The Redemptor needs that, plus a whole bunch of touch-up on all the parts that need to be black, but got some of the spillover from the blue.
A better look at a different base that I'm doing the same way as the Redemptor. They look like crap right now, but once there are a couple more layers of grey drybrushed on, the spots of colour leave just enough left to add some interest and visual texture, like there's litter and spills and all the other stuff that ends up on pavement.
I'm hoping to finish up some more Silver Tower stuff tonight, since my brother's coming by in the morning to play. So I should have something from that done to show soon. Until then, y'all have a good one, y'hear!

  1. Love the Slaanesh Armiger, I'm out of the loop with 40k these days, can Chaos take Armigers.....if they can can they take Marks?

I know what you mean about the base, they tend to look bloody awful right up to the finishing touches that tie it all together whenever I have painted marble type bases.

    1. Thanks!

They put a free Renegade Knights mini-Codex up on Warhammer Community. They don't get Marks, unfortunately, but they get all the classes of Knight that are available in plastic, plus a Warlord Trait and a couple of Stratagems. Hopefully we will get proper Chaos Knights at some point, but for now, this works pretty well.

  2. Don't post nicely painted pics of Armigers!!! Its bad enough that despite a critical lack of funds that I wanted one already, and you're not helping...

    1. I really couldn't afford it when I got that box myself. They're just so cool!

  3. Interested to see how the base turns out when complete! The random colour patches are an interesting idea.

    1. It's the same approach I took with the Iron Warriors Dreads I did a couple of years ago. I didn't manage to get great pics, but you can still sort of see the effect in a couple of them: https://cascadiangrimdark.blogspot.com/2016/10/dreadtober-4-better-late-than-never.html

  4. I have actually started doing something similar with my bases, although I do it on brown bases. I give them a coat of dryad bark, and while it's wet, I wet blend Vallejo olive green in to make mossy looking patches etc. I then wash and finish the rest with drybrushing, but it really cuts through the homogenous colour.

I like the mask on your armiger too. I might have to paint one up for my Emperor's Children at some point. I have plenty of other stuff to work on first though!

    1. Yeah, it really helps a lot to get a less uniform, more natural look.

Thanks! The mask is going to be at least partly done in flesh tones when I'm finished, as are some things on the carapace that aren't really visible here. I think it's off the Defiler kit, but I'm not sure.

  5. I bet your bits box is a thing to behold. I've got some of those gargoyle things that you have on the end of Armiger guns (no idea what they are). However, I'm really struggling with Chaos iconography at the moment, having never played Chaos. Necron and Tyranid bits don't really work. Plus I was thinking of doing something similar with the Armiger heads but I'll have to actually sculpt something Chaosy. Anyway, I really like the Armiger and the chewing gum pavement stain idea.

    1. Thanks! Bitz box? Singular? Ha! It is to laugh! But yeah, even tho there are more things I would like to have available, my bitz collection is pretty epic.

The gargoyle heads on the ends of the guns are from the Chaos Vehicle upgrade sprue. Replacing the ends of the barrels of Imperial Weapons to make them Chaos ones is pretty much what they're for.

Necron and Nid bits can have their place in Chaos conversions, but they need to be used sparingly, yeah. Without starting a Chaos Space Marine or Daemon army, your best bet is probably to scope out eBay for bits. The Forgefiend/Maulerfiend kit and the Defiler kit have the best stuff for working on Vehicles. Other than that, it's pretty much sculpting or carving stuff from plasticard.

  6. God damn blogspot with the sign out button where you'd logically have the "post" button killed my first post. I was saying that the pair look great and that I really like the way you've added that Slaanneshi Icon to the Armiger in a way that it looks like it's meant to be there. I haven't even gotten as far as taking my "before" photos for my own Dreadtober stuff, so who knows if I'll get anything finished...

    1. Thanks! It took a fair bit of work carefully bending that icon to fit the carapace without snapping it, but it was totally worth it.
