Gellerpox Infected: Vox-Shamblers

OK, again with the Nurgle warning here. These guys aren't as bad as the Nightmare Hulks, but they're still pretty gross.
I like the metal masks inherently, but not so much here, so I did some head swaps. I also decided to do some variation in skin tones, like some of them were flushed and feverish from the infection, while others were pallid and drained. You'll see that continue when I get to the Nightmare Hulks. Other than that, it was mostly just tons of Typhus Corrosion and various browns for rust, and then Nurgle's Rot, Blood for the Blood God, and various off-coloured washes for the injuries and signs of infection. I tried actually using Ryza Rust for drybrushing rather than blobbing it on as a base, which worked a bit better, but I'm still not a huge fan of it, and some of the rust really doesn't feel right to me. The washes and other fluids on the infections, on the other hand, I'm really happy with how they came out. Anyhow, here they are, you have been warned:

I'm not entirely sure where the new head for the Herg came from. I've always liked the aesthetic of Chaos minions who are still functional despite being clearly blinded, and it fit the mostly bloated and "melting" look of the base Model pretty well. On the back of the vest, I decided that there were various coloured patches indicating department and rank for the lower level crew. The Gellerpox Mutants are supposed to have started in the engineering and drives section, so I chose yellow for that section, and the black stripe below that indicates he was of the very lowest rank.

Grummax has a head from a zombie, that I picked because the beard seemed somewhat reminiscent of the one on Big Spike (the Nightmare Hulk with the insectile mutations). Rather than intestines, I figured the things hanging out of his guts are some sort of worms or tentacles. I also switched skin tone where the tentacle is sutured on to his right arm, to make it clear that it was something from some other being, not just some sort of injury that had been stitched up. Unfortunately, I didn't think of that until it was too late to apply the same approach to Vulgrar and The Writher without re-doing a bunch of work, because it would have worked well for them, too. I like how a lot of the details came out on this one, but I think I might try to carefully cut the head off the axe and flip it over, because I like the rest effect on what's currently the "back" side much better. Also, it's a small thing, but I'm really happy with how the leather on his boot came out. Even if I have trouble looking at it because just seeing the knee and ankle angles makes my own joints hurt.

Last, but not least, we have Pugglox, who got a head left over from a Plaguebearer. Really happy with how the rust came out on him, as well as a bunch of the gross effects, particularly on his back and the mess that is his left shoulder. I feel like I should maybe go back and try to make the spines on his right shoulder stand out a bit more, but I like how the claw on that arm came out.

That's it for this lot. Not sure what I'm going to put up next. I've got pics of the Nightmare Hulks ready, and found a bunch more pics of the Ryza Pattern Ruins that I had completely forgotten about taking, but I'd also like to get to rambling on about the GSC Units, and fangirling over the Combat Arena Models revealed at the New York Toy Fair. Whatever it ends up being, until then, y'all have a good one, y'hear!

  1. Lovely stuff!
I think it's time that the Underhive had an outbreak of Gellarpox, it will give me an excuse to paint some up ;-)

    1. Thanks! Yeah, getting these guys in Necromunda would be great. Or some sort of variation. The Gellerpox specifically attacks ships during Warp travel, so planetside infections seem less likely. One more reason I don't like this hyper-specific approach to Nurgle infections.

    2. Fortunately Necromunda has a ship grave yard and the Eye of Selene :D

    3. Oh, yeah, good call. The expansion of the game into new areas is going to open up an amazing variety of cool new options.

  2. I like the less "guts hanging everywhere" approach on these guys. They came out great.

    1. Thanks! Guts hanging out are a detail to be used sparingly. Easy to overdo it.

  3. Nice job!

I don't like Ryza Rust either. Reckon it's something to do with the fact it's supposed to be a drybrush, so it makes the raised detail very bright orange. Might be because rust doesn't do that, the brightest bits are often the lower areas where it builds up, raised bits get knocked off. Works better as a base colour with washes over and metal detail over the top, I reckon!

    1. Thanks! And yeah. My best results with it have been from stippling it on as the very first stage of my rust effects, trying to get it down into the lower areas as much as possible, and then laying down stuff like Typhus Corrosion and Skrag brown to most cover it up.

I need to try thinning it down enough to use as a wash at some point. I figure it might work better like that.

    2. That's how I use.
Thin it down a lot, splash it all over and then wipe it off with my thumb.....it's one of those processes where I end up with more paint over me than the model ;-)
